Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Poster & Teaser
Walt Disney Studios has just released a new poster for their upcoming 2017 movie Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Also, they plan to release the first trailer tonight during the airing of Fear the Walking Dead on AMC. The fifth installment to the blockbuster franchise is much anticipated with the return of fan favorite, Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom. Although Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides made over $1 billion worldwide, most would agree the latest installment was their least favorite in the franchise. Many hope the saga of Captain Jack Sparrow gets back to what made the first three so beloved with Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg.
The official synopsis for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the following:
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.
Dead Men Tell No Tales will introduce Kaya Scodelario, Brenton Thwaites as Henry Turner and Javier Bardem as the sinister Captain Salazar. We will also see the return of Johnny Depp as the rum-loving Captain Jack Sparrow along with Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa, Kevin R. McNally as Joshamee Gibbs and Stephen Graham as Scrum. Furthermore, Golshifteh Farahani (Exodus: Gods and Kings) will co-star in the Pirates of the Caribbean film. These actors will join Adam Brown (The Hobbit trilogy), Delroy Atkinson, and Danny Kirrane (Automata). Finally, we will see the return of Orlando Bloom to the Disney franchise resurrecting his role as Davey Jones (Will Turner) with his Flying Dutchman.
Details have been circling the web regarding the newer characters, such as Scodelario and Thwaites’ roles. In an interview a few weeks ago, Scodelario told Digital Spy a bit about her character and her role in the 2017 release.
“[Carina] is an astronomer, and she is an academic,” Scodelario explained. “She’s fighting for the right to study at [a] university, because women couldn’t at that time. So she’s on her own journey…looking for the trident of Poseidon…and she has a diary with clues, and she encounters Jack Sparrow along the way, and he messes everything up. As he does. And it’s fun!”
In addition to Scodelario’s character description, Thwaites was interviewed by The Mirror earlier last year for another role. The interviewer got around to his next film, Pirates. This is what Thwaites had to say about his character, Henry Turner, at the time.
“It’s about a young man who wants to reconnect with his father, Davy Jones. There’s a curse that prevents him from doing that. I think it’s about how he goes around that and tries to fix it and he has to save his dad. I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be a lot of fun!”
It sounds as though these two new characters will be the future of the franchise, as they both have something new and different to offer, yet still be connected to the originals. Along with a rumor she’s Barbossa’s daughter, Scodelario could end up as Captain Jack’s next love interest/hindrance on his way to obtain Poseidon’s Trident. Even if the rumors of Barbossa’s connection to Scodelario’s character is false, he and Davey Jones (Bloom) will have plenty of reason to band together with the wily Captain Jack, as Captain Salazar seeks to kill them all.
