Legends of Tomorrow Ep. 2×07 Title, Synopsis, Promos
A Time Pirate in the Old West
In episode six of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, a Time Aberration sends the team back to the old west to save Jonah Hex. With the Time Masters gone and Rip Hunter missing, the team is fighting a war on three fronts. They are trying to keep the timeline intact from both time pirates and the team of Reverse Flash and Damien Darhk and trying to locate their old captain. This time, a time pirate has traveled to the old west to find dwarf star alloy. Unfortunately, he meets his demise when Quentin Turnbull takes his technology for finding dwarf star alloy. The encounter is what caused the Time Aberration, as it leads to Turnbull taking over the entire west with his arsenal of dwarf star ore.
The Return of Jonah Hex
The Legends is alerted to a new Aberration by, what Ray Palmer calls a ‘trouble alert’, in a call back to the ‘SuperFriends’ morning cartoon show. When the team arrives in Liberty, CO during 1874, they find Jonah Hex about to be hung by some of Turnbull’s men. After saving Hex, they figure out history has changed. At some point, Turnbull was able to capture the entire West in what is referred to as Turnbull Territory. The team separates in order to investigate how Turnbull is able to conquer the West. What they discover is dwarf star alloy and a tracking device for the ore from the future. Instead of waiting for Captain Sara Lance’s plan to develop, Hex jumps the gun against Turnbull. Hex’s impatience gets Steel shot by one of Turnbull’s dwarf star bullets that penetrates his metal skin.
Cutting Off Turnbull at the Pass
While Steel recovers from his injury, Ray figures out Turnbull’s plan to capture the West. Turnbull’s plan is to take a train full of dwarf star alloy to destroy Summit Pass, cutting off the West from the rest of the country. The team splits up to end this Aberration, once and for all. Heat Wave and Vixen are directed to blow up the mines, Sara and Hex go after Turnbull, while Ray, Jax and Steel try to stop the train. After Steel literally stops the train with his own two hands, the mine is blown and Hex takes down Turnbull. While they have a drink together, Hex is finally able to see past Sara being just a woman, but now as the Captain. He promises to turn in Turnbull to the Federal Government, so the Aberration is stopped. Since he’s been on the Waverider many times before, Hex walks off the ship by waving his hand over the door sensor.
During the episode, we see the different dynamics between many of the team members. Martin Stein was unable to help the team due to some temporal changes to his memories. He’s starting to remember a woman he’s never met before. He and Jax believe it might be caused by his interaction with his younger self back in 1987. Stein claims he loves this woman, but doesn’t know why and whether she replaces his wife, Clarissa. It’s possible she isn’t a love interest, but a daughter he never had before meeting his younger self. As Stein is out of commission, Vixen has tasked herself to helping Heat Wave tame the wild animal within him. He reveals to Vixen he’s a lot more than what the team thinks of him, but not to reveal it to the rest of the them. In the meantime, Ray and Nate have conversations about what makes a hero. Ever since Nate had to destroy Ray’s A.T.O.M. suit, Ray believes he’s more a hero now than ever before. To inspire Nate after being shot, Ray tells him his weakness and vulnerability is what makes him a hero. There’s no courage without fear. As repayment for the inspiration, Steel was able to take enough dwarf star alloy (about the size of a golfball, as one suit uses a dwarf star alloy big enough to fit on one’s finger) to power 20 A.T.O.M. suits. Before Ray can build his new suit, he creates a suit for Steel from Nate’s drawing. Earlier, Nate complained when he “steel up”, his clothes stretch out and they feel all weird. It’s an obvious poke at the Hulk. As the episode is about to end, Sara interrupts their bromance, as their friends from 2016 need their help.
It’s always good to see Jonah Hex on-screen. I’m always up for a good call back to Old Westerns. Next episode, we’ll find the Legends in the biggest superhero crossover in television history. They will close out the 4-night epic event with the finale to Invasion! We’ll learn more about Stein’s temporal memory changes and the message future Flash sent to the Waverider.
