Justice League’s First Official Look at Mera
Mera Makes World Debut on Justice League Set
Director Zack Snyder has released the first official look of Amber Heard as Mera on the set of Justice League. Filming in the UK for the ensemble movie wrapped up less than two weeks ago. However, additional shooting in Iceland with at least Jason Mamoa, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and Amber Heard just wrapped, yesterday. After being vilified as the culprit in the harshly criticized Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Snyder has been more forthcoming with behind the scene photos and videos for his new film. In his latest, Ms. Heard can be seen making her debut as Mera, Queen of Atlantis and wife to Aquaman in the comics.
What Mera’s Presence Mean for Justice League
Rumors whether Amber Heard would keep her commitment to play Mera have been laid to rest with a single photo. In what can be considered just as symbolic as it looks heroic, Heard looks stunning as a stoic Mera. Her and Mamoa’s presence in Iceland must be connected to Aquaman’s scene from the trailer. Affleck’s Bruce Wayne searches out Arthur Curry in a coastal village. Assuming it’s Curry’s home village of Amnesty Bay and knowing it’s shot in Iceland, Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Heard’s Mera will be there with Aquaman and Batman. Whether it’s to recruit Aquaman a second time [see Bruce’s failure in the trailer] or Aquaman is returning to the sea after the battle, remains to be seen. We can safely assume Heard’s role will be no more than a cameo appearance, as she was on set for only a few days.
Does Heard Have the Acting Chops to Carry the Role
Some say Heard doesn’t have the acting chops to carry Mera throughout the DCEU. Others say she’s just another pretty face connected to a huge actor. Either way, many are not impressed with Heard’s casting. In the world of superhero movies since Iron Man, it’s rare to see a major role replaced by a different actor. With the exception of the Hulk and War Machine, the actors who play major heroes and villains have been a mainstay throughout this era. Since Mera should have a huge role in Aquaman’s story and movies, it would be hard press to imagine Warner Bros. replacing Heard at anytime. So, as of now, Amber Heard is and will be Mera throughout the DCEU.
I believe Heard has plenty of acting skills to portray and bring Mera to the big screen. There are films her acting is found wanting. However, she’s had some breakout roles in Pineapple Express, Never Back Down and Zombieland. Not critically acclaimed films, but her acting was more than good enough. The pinnacle of her acting career, thus far, was her role in The Danish Girl. She did a remarkable job as the Bohemian ballerina, Ulla. If one think she’s just another pretty face and doesn’t have the skills to carry the role, one only needs to watch The Danish Girl. There, you’ll see how she’ll do Mera ‘justice’.
