Krypton Family Adds 6 More
Krypton Population Increases by 6
According to an article by Deadline, the cast of Krypton added six more members. In addition to the cast members already on board, they will be joined by Ian McElhinney, Elliot Cowan, Ann Ogbomo, Rasmus Hardiker, Wallis Day and Aaron Pierre. Some may recognize McElhinney as Barristen Selmy from Game of Thrones. The other five actors are unknowns to most Americans, as they’re mostly from across the pond.
House of El
McElhinney will play Val-El, grandfather of Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe). He is a rogue genius who believes that space exploration is a basic form of self-defense. Without success, he tries to warn the Kryptonian elite about the arrival of an ancient threat. Since the bio given for Sig-El states he is now in the lowest caste after his family was stripped of it’s rank, it could mean Val-El’s failure led to his family’s predicament. Val-El would be Superman’s great great grandfather.
House of Zod
Obgomo will play Primus [General] Alura Zod, mother to Lyta Zod (Georgina Campbell) and a leader of Krypton’s military guild. She is an extremely tough and demanding training officer. The House of Zod is known as a distinguished member of the military caste on Krypton. It’s no surprise that both members of the Zod family are in the military. Since Lyta Zod is a cadet and her mother is a tough training officer, we can assume they’ll be some tough love thrown around.
House of Vex
Cowan will play Daron Vex, Chief Magistrate of Kandor defending Krypton’s established oligarchy against heretics and dissidents. Day will play Nyssa Vex, junior magistrate and daughter of Daron Vex. It seems the House of Vex are in a higher caste whom become magistrates. When the House of El fell, I’m sure the House of Vex had a hand in it. If you noticed, they are from Kandor. In Superman lore, the city of Kandor survived the destruction of Krypton as they were shrunken into a bottle and stolen by Brainiac. There might also be a family connection between Daron Vex and Car-Vex from modern times. In the comics, Car-Vex was a Kryptonian criminal sent to the Phantom Zone. General Zod released her to become a sleeper agent on Earth. She also appeared in the Man of Steel movie as a loyal follower of General Zod.
House of Em
Pierre will play Dev-Em, a cadet under the command of Priumus Alura Zod. Since the show will have a forbidden romance between Seg-El and Lyta Zod, I predict Dev-Em will be jealous and become a thorn in their relationship. It might even lead to Dev-Em wanting to murder Seg-El out of jealousy. In the comics, he’s a murderer sentenced to the Phantom Zone and an enemy of Mon-El and the Legion of Super-Heroes. In the Man of Steel movie, there are multiples of Dev-Em. According to the prequel comic, Dev-Em was Krypton’s first murderer in centuries nearly 20,000 (18,625) years ago and stowed away on the same scout ship as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s older cousin. After a fight with Kara, the ship was damaged and crash landed on Ellesmere Island. It was the same ship that was discovered at the beginning of the movie. He is presumed dead.
Before Krypton exploded, Kryptonians were born of clones. Kryptonians became so advanced, they created clones of themselves in case of injury. The result was immortality, but the price was sterility. Due to generations and generations of clones, there weren’t many who could bear children. In the movie, Dev-Em was once again born on Krypton as a soldier in the Kryptonian Warrior Guild. He became a loyal follower of General Zod whom was also banished to and freed from the Phantom Zone. He arrived on Earth with Zod, but apparently dies when the scout ship crashes into Black Zero causing the Phantom Drive to open up a temporary portal into the Phantom Zone. In all versions of Dev-Em, he becomes a murderous psychopath. Will this be the fate of Dev-Em on Syfy’s Krypton?
The Lowest Caste
Hardiker will play Kem, a brilliant engineer as well as Seg-El’s best friend and partner in an underground tech-repair business. His family is rankless and among the lowest of caste. Not much is known about the character or the future of his house. It’s possible, like the House of El, for the character’s family to rise to another caste. If that ever happens, they could reveal a more recognizable house name.
Based on the DC Comics characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Krypton is set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet. It follows Superman’s grandfather Seg-El — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.
